Canned food lasts only when the can and storage conditions stay safe. Check every can before storing. Skip cans that are bulging, leaking, badly rusted, or deeply dented.

Start with cans that are clean, sealed, and undamaged.

Store cans in a cool, dry place

Keep unopened cans in a pantry between 50°F and 70°F when possible. Avoid garages, sheds, damp basements, and areas near heat, moisture, or sunlight.

Rotate and protect your supply

Use the oldest cans first. Label home-canned jars with the date. After opening, move leftovers to a clean, covered glass or plastic container and refrigerate.

Know when to throw food away

Discard food with off smells, spurting liquid, mold, or unusual color. If safety is uncertain, throw it out.
